New Emyoku album to be released this week…

July 11, 2011 Leave a comment

Emyoku’s second full length album, entitled “All of One”, is set to be released on iTunes this week (Rhapsody and Amazon coming a bit later). The album is 14 tracks of electronic goodness and is about an hour in total duration. This album is quite a bit different than the first in that it has less of an ambient electronica feel and more of an upbeat, harder hitting quality to it. That being said, there are some songs on the album that are a bit more on the ‘chill’ side. Also, many of the tracks have vocals by both Zak and Andrew. Overall, the music draws from numerous styles (electronica, hip hop, acoustic, rock, etc.) but comes together to form a cohesive and refreshing playlist. Stay tuned for the release…

The two dudes in LMFAO are uncle and nephew AND related to the head of Motown

June 7, 2011 4 comments

When I first heard LMFAO, I thought they were the music equivalent of Jackson Pollock- meaning that anybody can do what they do, but they just happen to be the two right guys and just the right time. Make some standard electronic and hip-hop beats, chant-rap over it = PROFIT!

But now I see that they are directly related to the guy who started Motown Records and I think… they are the music equivalent of Nancy Sinatra. Now, I’m not saying I don’t enjoy some of their tunes, but this kind of spoils it a little for me- anybody else???

From Wikipedia:

LMFAO is an American electro hop duo that formed in 2006 in Los Angeles, California, consisting of rappers and DJs Redfoo, (Stefan Kendal Gordy, born September 3, 1975)[2][3] and SkyBlu (Skyler Husten Gordy, born August 23, 1986).[4] They are the son and grandson, respectively, of Motown record label founder Berry Gordy, making them uncle and nephew.[5][6] Their music incorporates a theme of partying and drinking, and the group commonly refers to their music style as “party rock.” The name LMFAO is the acronym for “Laughing My Fucking Ass Off” and is pronounced letter by letter.

Also, I didn’t come upon this- someone else did.

But still… they are having fun:

Egyptian Princess had Coronary Artery Disease

May 19, 2011 Leave a comment

“The Egyptian princess Ahmose-Meryet-Amon, who lived in Thebes (Luxor) between 1580 and 1550 BC and who is now known to be first person in human history with diagnosed coronary artery disease, lived on a diet rich of vegetables, fruit and a limited amount of meat from domesticated (but not fattened) animals. Wheat and barley were grown along the banks of the Nile, making bread and beer the dietary staples of this period of ancient Egypt. Tobacco and trans-fats were unknown, and lifestyle was likely to have been active.”

But alas, she still wasn’t healthy. Read the rest of the article here.

We now have a National Jukebox

May 15, 2011 Leave a comment

The Library of Congress just created a National Jukebox online.

With a selection of more than 10,000 recordings from 1901-1925 made by Victor Talking Machine Company, which by the way would be a great name for a band. Or maybe not. Anyways. If you are in to stumbling around a bunch of old recordings to kill some time, then this is a great place to do such a thing.

Source.

These guys are both awesome- Pretty Lights is from Colorado and has made some of the best hip-hop influenced electronic music in recent years and Bassnectar is well… Bassnectar, getting attention all over the place for his heavy sounds and skilled use of sampling. I mean… a collaboration between these two could be epic. Period.

Apparat

I recently purchased an album entitled “Walls” by the Germany-based ambient/electronic artist known as Apparat. It is one of those rare albums that I fell in love with the first time I heard it. I was able to hear the album in its entirety that first day since I was on a road trip, and it was perfect for the long drive. Below are a couple of songs from the album. For more info on Apparat, check here.

Oldtime Blues Recording Treasure 1928

March 21, 2011 Leave a comment

Willie McTell

This song is one of those songs.

It sparks something.

It was October in 1928, in Atlanta, and a thirty year old, blind, African-American guitarist records a set of songs for Victory records. This is, possibly, the best song from that session:

Two minutes, thirty-four seconds. Twelve-string guitar. And Willie.

It would go on to be covered several times, eventually evolving into the most familiar version by the Allman Brothers Band. Which Rolling Stone would declare to be the ninth greatest guitar song of all time.

Give a Second Listen to Gorillaz’s Plastic Beach

March 15, 2011 Leave a comment

When this album first came out I was against it. I’ll admit it. It sounded too different from what I was hoping and expecting from one of my favorite pseudo-cartoon-bands. So I dismissed it and went on. Then I got bored and thought, “oh what the hell, it does have Mos Def all over it…” And listened to the album again. And now- I dig it. It isn’t my new fav album or even my new fav album by the Gorillaz. But it is worth a second listen. I mean… how can you not enjoy an album with “Superfast Jellyfish” on it?

Cornet solo from 1903

March 10, 2011 Leave a comment

Look at that beautiful 'stache.

Jules Levy was billed as The World’s Greatest Cornetist, to which you might be saying, “What the hell is a cornetist?” You’re not alone (my text editor keeps underlining the word in squiggly red lines). But I swear it is a word!

In fact, it is someone you plays the cornet. Which is what Jules is holding up to his face in the picture above (which Wikipedia says is from the 1880s). You can still buy cornets (at Amazon for example). They are basically like trumpets but not quite like trumpets. But back in the nineteenth century they were pretty popular. I’ve heard they were even preferred over the trumpet for their clear sound, but I don’t have any evidence to prove that.

The thing that is amazing is that even though Jules lived and played over a hundred years ago. We can still hear what he sounded like today. Ah, the beauty of the internet.

Here’s the note from archive.org:

This was a test pressing of this historic performer. It was Levy in 1878 who was trying at shows to confuse the tin-foil phonograph by playing fast, but here we have the sounds of the same performer playing shortly before he died.

Here’s the tune, enjoy:

Just a quick Bio of Jules Levy:

He was born in London and first learn to play the cornet only by using the mouthpiece (he couldn’t afford the whole instrument). He became a renowned musician and toured with Patrick Gilmore’s famous band where he was encouraged to improvise and thus is one of the earlier examples of what would later become jazz. He was also a pioneer in recording music and testing recording technology, always challenging engineers to improve sound recording design.

4th Dimension

February 5, 2011 Leave a comment

The other night I was watching an episode of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series where he discusses the 4th dimension. I found it very interesting and decided to post the segment (video 1 above) of the episode. The 2nd video describes basically the same thing though with animation and a bit more explanatory power. The third vid shows an animation of a rotating tesseract (4 dimensional cube). Just some food for thought as you surf the 2-dimensional world of the internet…

“Dubstep is just slow hip-hop”

February 2, 2011 Leave a comment

Q: What do you say to music lovers who just can’t wrap their heads around dubstep? There are a lot of people out there who aren’t jumping on the dubstep train.

A: I say it’s just slow hip-hop.

For those of you not in the know- the dubstep movement has been playing hard on the West Coast for sometime now. It originated in the UK- specifically the Big Apple Record shop in South London- the UK dubstep is made up of a whole range of artists, such as: Skream, Caspa, Rusko, and NERO (not a comprehensive list by any means).

As usually happens with these things, dubstep found its way to the US and has appeared to gain the largest following in San Francisco and L.A. Where dubstep tracks have been coming up out of the ground like a newly tapped oil reserve.

American Dubstep is just as varied as its London counterpart, including artsits: Bassnectar, Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, and the Glitch Mob- whose members also release solo work respectively under the names: Ooah, Boreta, and edIT. One of the founding members of the Glitch Mob, who split with them and is now a solo artist, is Kraddy (pictured above). For a short interview with Kraddy that Denver Westword published today where he dispels any trepidation by explaining that yes- dubstep IS just slow hip-hop, go here.
